Horse welfare in the UK

Each year our 17 Field Officers make hundreds of follow-up visits to situations they have been out to previously to make sure the necessary improvements are being made. 

The Animal Welfare Act (England and Wales) and the Animal Health and Welfare Act (Scotland) place a duty of care on those responsible for horses. Find out more here. 

Here are just some statistics from our UK welfare work.

• Our Field Officers visit around 1,500 reported welfare concerns each year.
• On average we take about 300 horses into our care every year – but this has been known to exceed 350 horses in one year.
• We have approximately 300 horses in our Rescue and Rehoming Centres at any one time.
• We rehome around 300 horses and ponies of all types each year.
• We have over 1,800 horses, ponies and donkeys out on loan in the UK through our Rehome a Horse scheme. 
• Our Field Officers and Rehoming Officers do over 3,000 visits to our rehomed horses every year.
